Whoops...that Italian Margarita was just for me.
YUM
So today I tried two essential pins: making my own frugalista Mrs. Meyer's hand soap and cleaning a thermos.
Praise the Lord, so far these are going well.
First for the thermos. Hubby and my coffee mugs get gross. For real. If I had thought to start this blog sooner I would have taken before pictures. Oh well. We both have Starbucks mugs for daily coffee on the way to work, and we have a carafe for coffee since he drinks caff and I drink decaf. In our crazy twin-parenting world one pot of coffee per day is more than enough...so the carafe gets us through without making caff and decaf every day.
Anywho, hubby often starts the day with a stop at a local coffee joint. When we first got married, his daily Ms. Barista Lady mentioned his clean mug one day. Well this new (at the time) wife had spent a LONG time cleaning that sucker. And I was pleased Ms. Barista Lady noticed. But that was a ton of work. So when I ran across this pin promising a shortcut, I was intrigued.
So today at the grocery I bought some denture cleaning tablets, came home, and put them to work.
Just drop a few denture cleaning tablets into warm water in your nasty thermos...and voila!
Not too shabby!
Mine didn't clean perfectly, but it is also the oldest and plastic, not stainless.
If you like step by step:
1. Fill thermos with really warm water.
2. Add 1 denture cleaning tab per 1-3 cups of water (depending on the age and depth of stain).
3. Let sit for 5 minutes while tablet effervesces (love that word).
4. Repeat 1-3 for really bad stains. Seriously. I used eight of these dudes on my three items to clean...
5. Rinse and wash with soap.
6. Enjoy crystal clear thermos...at least for a day or two.
On my way home from the store I thought that I probably should have tried my favorite effervescing cleaning solution, vinegar and baking soda, before buying $4 worth of denture cleaning tablets. But really, it's $4. Not a great loss. Maybe I'll try that someday, but for now I have 32 denture cleaning tablets to burn. I told you they were gross!!!
And now...frugalista Mrs. Meyer's homemade hand soap. I've loved Mrs. Meyer's, especially Lavender scent, since the day my mom introduced me to her. Crisp, clean, delicious (smelling), and beautifully pricey. I don't know why I love pricey things, but I do... So when I ran across this pin I was thrilled. Mrs. Meyer's without the Mrs. Meyer's price tag?! Hellllllooooo gorgeous!
This was super easy. Just grate a bar of soap, throw it in a pot with a gallon of DISTILLED water and 2 T of liquid glycerin (find it in your wound care aisle), warm it 'til it melts, let it cool, and then you've got a gallon+ of liquid soap!
Apparently you have to let this homemade Mrs. Meyer's sit for a while to congeal, so the final pics are forthcoming...if I get to it.
And the step by step for you step by step friends.
1. Grate a bar of Mrs. Meyer's soap in you favorite scent (use a cheapo grater if you want to keep it separate from your kitchen tools even though soap cleans nicely...you'll probably snap it like I did).
2. Pour a gallon of distilled water into a large pot. Save that jug!
3. Turn on burner to medium-high heat.
4. Dump grated soap in.
5. Add 2 T liquid glycerin.
6. Stir til it melts.
7. Turn off burner and let it sit until it congeals (about 10-12 hours).
8. Using a funnel, return your soap to that brilliantly saved gallon jug.
9. Add some to a pump soap dispenser.
10. Wash yo hands!
11. Enjoy your lovely smelling clean hands.
Finally, if you hate your cheapo grater (we've had this ridiculously cheap thing for 5+ years...pretty sure it's from the dollar store) and want an excuse to get a new one, press hard when grating. You'll snap that sucker in no time flat.
So I'm pretty sure that means I get a new grater. Hooray!
And in case you need that Italian Margarita to make it through your night...
1. Find a glass.
2. Add some ice.
3. Add a shot of Disaronno (amaretto liqueur).
4. Add a serving of Jose Cuervo Golden Margarita.
5. Drink.
6. Repeat as needed.
Cheers, my friends!
